Artists in California - Brendan Monroe

What inspires artists? Especially young artist in their mid twenties?
Brendan Monroe says " Hmm...the outdoors, science, other people, life and my curiosity..."
Brendan Monroe is a an artist based in LA, California. His work caught my attention through Android 8. After reading the interview with him I visited his homepage and liked his work ad hoc. I am not sure what it is maybe the slightly dark side, the warm earth tones or the sense of surrealism.
