Based on the true story, FBI upstart Eric O'Neill ( Ryan Philliipe) enters into a power game with his boss, Robert Hanssen ( Chris Cooper) , an agent who was ultimately convicted of selling secrets to the Soviet Union.
Hanssen was an member of the FBI's elite Soviet Analytical Unit and he sold thousands of pages of classified information to the Soviet Union for about 15 years. He compromised KGB double agents working for the US as well as the US's contingency plans in case of nuclear attack. He was transferred to a new position at the FBI Washington DC headquarters and assigned to guard the most sensitive secrets.
During this time, O'Neill was assigned to surreptitiously observer Hanssen because of suspicions of supervisors. O'Neill was able to inculcate himself and befriend Hanssen and helped get him arrested during a "dead drop" in Virginia. Hanssen is now serving a life sentence with no chance for parole.
