Please note that the DESCENT contains ADULT material that may not be suitable for most audiences. I have no rating on this movie when it was submitted. It contains material that can be perceived as extremely offensive.

Descent is a Rosario Dawson's newest movie opened August 10. Dawson plays a senior college student who is date-raped by a fellow student. Rather than report it to the authorities, go to a hospital, seek counseling, report it to the university, she ends up changing a promising college student who is attacked and through her own exploration of the degradation, she descends into a hell of her own making as she seeks revenge, retaliation and vengence against a crime committed against her.

The feature debut of co-writer/ director/producer Talia Lugacy, Descent is a film that unnervingly, - UNFLINCHINGLY - tackles some of the country's most taboo subjects. Taboo subjects doesn't begin to tell you enough about the film- it depicts rape, full frontal nudity, drug use, S&M and even a rape of a man. This is Film Noir in its most literal sense. Most of the movie is done with very dark lighting. Sometimes you aren't sure what you are seeing. It's that weird and hard to watch because on a BIG screen (and I saw it on a screener on a wide screen TV), it's going to POP out at you.

It's also film noir in the essence. Maya's violation leads her down a dark path of debauchery that ultimately ends in some despicable acts of revenge and retaliation. What she learns in the end is that the revenge she sought doesn't lead to redemption- but hell.

I have reviewed via a screener copy with no rating attached. While this might be R rated, it should be X-rated for it's extremely violent, degrading and sexual content. I sure want to find out who the co-writer is on this screenplay.

I warn you this is a decidedly cruel movie. The horrific ending lasts 15 "way too long" minutes. If you choose to pay to see this in a theater, I would love to know if you felt that it was a money well spent or would Ratatouille have been a better choice.
